The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsors a Housing Choice voucher program for very low income families and individuals. Participants are free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program. The housing choice vouchers are administered by local public housing authorities. Eligibility is based on total annual gross income and family size. Your local PHA should have a list of landlords who are willing to take Housing Choice vouchers. You are also free to seek out landlords who are willing to participate in the program. To apply for public housing or Housing Choice (Section 8) vouchers, you must contact your local Public Housing Authority. If you encounter a long wait list, you may want to apply at more than one public housing authority.
