Friends of the Children is a national non-profit organization that provides intensive, long-term mentoring to our most vulnerable children. Children are selected when they begin school, and are guided and supported by a mentor until they graduate from high school. It is the hope of Friends of the Children to expand, in order to reach as many children in as many cities as possible. For now, they operate in five cities: Portland, OR, Klamath Falls, OR, Boston, MA, New York, NY, and Seattle, WA. Because Friends of the Children selects children when they begin school, the program is probably not much use if you are already about to age out and are caught without a mentor. But their vision demonstrates the importance of mentoring and maintaining long-term connections. If you need a mentor, it’s never too late to begin! Try to connect with someone, perhaps through one of the other programs mentioned in the Mentoring section of this forum.
