I am a mother of a daughter released from foster care just today in court. Her foster sister is aging out of the system May 6th. She has college paid for through the state of Kansas but no where to live, work, or transportation. Her and my daughter are very close, and I want to help her with her needs. The case workers have not done their job, any resources I can find for this girl would be helpful.

Hi, Kim- A big welcome to you, thank you for joining us! I am really pleased that your daughter's friend will be going to college, and it's great that she has you for moral support. I am not personally very informed about what is available in the state of Kansas. I'll check on some things and let you know what I find. In the meantime, make sure she has filled out a FAFSA (available at fafsa.gov). She should visit the college that she wants to attend and ask their financial aid department to help her find and apply for scholarships. The more money she gets for school, the better the chances are that she will have some of it left over after tuition and books to pay for housing and transportation. She can also apply for "work study". When she fills out the FAFSA, she can state that she is willing to do work study. She will then be provided with a part time job on campus. I'll try to find out more for you.

Apparently there are Independent Living Program services available in your area. If she qualifies and is willing, ILP services can be a big help. They make a world of difference in the success of these youth. She would have to request these services. She may be able to receive services and support until she is 23 years of age, if she is going to college. For more info, please visit: www.dcf.ks.gov/services/PPS/Pages/IndependentLivingProgram.aspxShe may be able to get Chafee room and board funds. She should ask her caseworker to provide her with information about this. Many caseworkers are tired and overworked - she may have to be persistent to get answers. If she just wants to be "free" or doesn't qualify for ILP services, she can contact Blue Valley Multi-Service Center, 7500 W. 149th Terrace, Room 413, Overland Park, Kansas 66223, call 239-4560. They offer a number of support services including emergency rent help, food, information on section 8 vouchers, and short term transitional housing. Case managers will offer advice and support to people who need help. Good luck... I'll let you know if I find anything else.
